Why Bearings Fail: 7 Causes (and How to Stop Replacing Them)

Replacing the same bearing over and over? Bearing failure almost always has a root cause — and it's rarely "bad luck." Here are the seven most common reasons bearings die young, and how to stop the cycle.

1. Counterfeit bearings

The #1 preventable cause. Fake SKF, Timken, and NSK bearings flood online marketplaces — correct-looking boxes, garbage steel. They fail in weeks or months. If your "brand name" bearing died absurdly fast, suspect the source before the application. Buy from suppliers who stake their reputation on authenticity — every SKF bearing we sell is genuine NOS, never a question mark.

2. Wrong clearance

Electric motors typically need C3 clearance (greater internal play to handle heat expansion). Install a standard-clearance (CN) bearing and it runs tight, hot, and short-lived. Always match the clearance suffix on the original — compare our SKF 6311 C3 against a standard 6311.

3. Contamination

Dirt, moisture, and metal particles are bearing killers. Open bearings in dusty environments need proper sealing — or switch to sealed variants like the SKF 6311-2RS1 or SKF 6308-2Z. One careless installation with dirty hands can start a failure months later.

4. Poor lubrication

Too little grease, the wrong grease, or mixing incompatible greases. Sealed-for-life bearings (2RS) solve this — the factory fill is correct and stays clean. For re-greasable types, follow the manufacturer's quantity and interval, not guesswork.

5. Misalignment and bad fits

Shafts and housings out of tolerance force the bearing to flex every revolution. A bearing pressed on crooked, or a housing bore worn oversize, guarantees premature fatigue. Measure your fits — don't force them.

6. Electrical damage (fluting)

In VFD-driven motors, stray shaft currents arc through the bearing, leaving washboard-like fluting on the raceways. If your motor runs on a drive, consider insulated bearings or shaft grounding.

7. Simply worn out — honestly

Sometimes the bearing just lived its life. But "worn out" after 6 months in a properly applied setup means one of causes 1–6 is at work. A quality bearing in the right application lasts years.

Break the replacement cycle

Most repeat failures trace back to causes 1 and 2: fake or wrong-spec bearings. The fix is boring but effective — genuine bearings, correct specification, from a trusted source. At RomTex Bearing & Supply, every bearing we sell is genuine NOS — SKF, Timken, NSK, FAG, NTN — new, documented, and correctly specified. Stop replacing, start running.
